Oakley

20th Century Theatre by Andy Helsby

Oakley might be one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods, but it’s still full of several lesser known secrets. Originally called “Four Mile” because of its proximity to Downtown Cincinnati, villagers began calling it Shusterville before the community’s current name was registered in 1869. A variety of secrets are tied to Oakley – everything from legends tied to Annie Oakley’s celebrity name to an old fashioned race track frequented by thoroughbreds. Perhaps one lesser known secret involves Cincinnati’s old streetcar system. During the 1930s and 1940s, streetcars arrived at Oakley Square every five minutes. We can only hope this classic, Queen City tradition is revived in the future.
